Spanish Control

Spanish expeditions like those of Dominguez-Escalante and Garces passed very near the area that is now Nevada.  Spanish authorities, however, showed very little interest in establishing political control of this vast area inhabited by Native Americans.  During the late 17th century and early 18th century, the government control of Nevada was Spanish, but only on the maps.  In reality, the government of the land that would be Nevada was as it had been for thousands of years: in the hands of the Native Americans.
