Building a State

During the years when Nevada was a territory, between 1861 and 1864, many people came to the area looking for jobs and, in some cases, a fortune in gold or silver.  Mining was an important occupation, but people worked at ranching and opened businesses in towns that quickly appeared in the Nevada Territory.
