Ft. Halleck, 1867

Fort Halleck was established in 1867.  The Central Pacific Railroad was under construction, and railroad workers needed protection.  The fort was built in Elko County, west of the Ruby Mountains.  Log, adobe, and stone buildings were constructed, but soldiers also slept in tents.

Sometimes the physical remains of the past disappear.  Buildings were often torn down, the lumber and bricks used in new buildings, and there is little evidence left that people lived and worked on the Nevada landscape.  In the case of Fort Halleck the buildings have long since disappeared, and nature reclaimed the land.  The site of the fort is indicated only by a blue historical marker and words that tell its history.
