Ft. McDermit, 1865

Fort McDermit was established in Humboldt County in 1865, on the east bank of the Quinn River.  The soldiers at the fort were responsible for protecting stage routes and wagon roads in the area.  Later, soldiers also protected a nearby Indian agency.

Buildings at the fort were made of adobe and stone.  Later, wood frame buildings were constructed.  Fort McDermit was maintained as a military installation until 1888.  At that time the military left and it became the Fort McDermit Indian Agency and Indian school.
