George Colton

George Colton, the man who found gold in Searchlight, Nevada, was born in Utah.  In 1897, Colton was traveling to Arizona, planning to prospect for the Lost Dutchman Mine in the Superstition Mountains.  He stopped for some prospecting in southern Nevada, about twenty miles from El Dorado Canyon.  The area around El Dorado Canyon had been mined since the 18th century, when the Spanish searched for gold.

Colton got lucky and found gold in two areas.  The claim was called the Duplex and was assayed at 72 ounces of gold per ton.  That was the beginning for the town of Searchlight.
